Ineffective Campaigns Caused Rise in Spread of Dengue Throughout District

Dengue has spread across the district as the control campaign was ineffective. According to Kamal Bhandari, a local youth, health institutions, local authorities, representatives, and other concerned bodies failed to conduct an effective campaign. So far this year, 147 people have been diagnosed with dengue in Palpa. Tikaram Adhikari, Information Officer at the Health Office Palpa, reported that cases have risen sharply, from 50 a month ago to over 150. Since mid-August, about four new cases have been confirmed daily. Among the infected, 94 are from Palpa, while others are being treated in different hospitals in other districts. Palpa is the most affected district out of the 12 districts in Lumbini Province. Health workers attribute the increase in infections to an environment that has become ideal for mosquitoes that spread dengue. Last year, dengue was confirmed in 655 people in the district.

Dengue is transmitted through the bite of a female Aedes (Aegypti) mosquito. Symptoms of dengue infection include headache, pain behind the eyes, back pain, joint and muscle pain, body aches, nausea, stomachache, bleeding from the nose or gums, visible blood spots on the body, and fainting.
