The Federation of Nepali Journalists reported an increase in press freedom violations in 2024, stating in a December 31, 2024 statement that its Media Monitoring Branch recorded 60 such incidents during the year.

Khagendra Phuyal from the Media Monitoring Unit of the Federation of Nepali Journalists stated that 2024 was a challenging year for press freedom due to incidents such as threats, arrests, and even killings of journalists for reporting news and collecting information. According to him, the Media Monitoring Branch of the Federation of Nepali Journalists recorded 60 incidents of press freedom violations this year. Phuyal stated that these incidents have increased compared to previous years. The records show that this year press freedom violations in Nepal increased, with 60 incidents reported, up from 58 in 2023, and 53 incidents in 2022. The Federation of Nepali Journalists deployed a media mission to address the threats faced by Gopal Dahal, a journalist from Itahari, who has been receiving death threats for reporting news, Phuyal stated.

The press release issued by the Federation of Nepali Journalists highlights that in 2024, the Nepali press sector did not receive the expected press-related laws. The long-awaited Media Council Bill has not been completed, and the government is preparing to introduce the Information Technology Bill, along with the Social Media Management and Operation Bill.
