Human Rights Activists Interact with Provincial Police for the Security of Raute Community

A team of human rights activists visited Ganesh Bahadur Aira, Nepal Police’s Karnali Province Chief of on October 4, 2021, and discussed about the security and situation of Raute community.

Narayan Subedi, Coordinator of INSEC Karnali Province Office, Surkhet, said that the discussion focused on the security of the community during the festive season. He further said, in the last few months the community has experienced different kinds of criminal activities therefore keeping this in mind, the discussion was held for their safety and protection.

During the discussion, Aira immediately contacted the police chiefs of Surkhet and Salyan and ordered them to strengthen the security in Raute settlement areas. He said, ‘The team has alerted us about this context and we are vigilant as well but we will be more conscious about their security.

The team discussed some recent issues related to Raute community. Last week, two women were brought to Birendranagar for making TikTok and uploading them on YouTube and in June, two women were sexually abused under the influence of alcohol and their video was uploaded on social media.

The team consisted of Narayan Subedi, Coordinator of Karnali Province, Pitamber Dhakal, Province Coordinator of Human Rights Defenders Network, Deviram Devkota, Chairperson of Federation of Nepali Journalists Karnali Province, Basanta Adhikari, District Vice Chairperson of Raute Endangered Marginalized Class Upliftment Foundation, Nisha Poudel from Aawaj and Durga Thapa, Focal Person of INSEC.

According to Basanta Adhikari, District Vice Chairperson of Raute Endangered Marginalized Class Upliftment Foundation, the Chief District Officer of Salyan has set up a police post in Raute some time ago.

The Rautes are currently living in Ghatgaon of Kupinde Municipality-1, Salyan. There are 141 Rautes in the settlement.
