Health Volunteer Alleged for Witchcraft, Complaint filed Against the Accused

Shiladevi Mahara, 35, of Rajaul in Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan-14 was beaten by Mangal Mahara, 48, Sumintradevi Mahara, 45, Sanjit Mahara, 27, Rabin Mahara, 20, and Devaki Devi Mahara, 26. They had beaten her alleging her to be a “witch.” The victim has filed a case against the accused at the Office of the Public Prosecutor on July 28, 2021.

Initially, the District Police Office denied filing the complaint against the group of accused. The complaint was lodged at the District Public Prosecutor’s Office on the joint initiative of INSEC, WOREC and Women’s Rights Defenders Network Dhanusha.

According to the victim Shiladevi, the accused had beaten her on July 16 while she was alone at home.

The victim was treated at the Provincial Hospital, Janakpur on July 16. Regarding the incident, DSP Makendra Kumar Mishra of the District Police Office Dhanusha said that action would be taken against the accused after receiving a complaint through the government prosecutor’s office.
