Family Boycotted for Eating at House of Person from Dalit Community

The family of Bhikari Mahato of Khesraha Rural Municipality-4, Sonma were boycotted by their community for attending an event at a person’s house belonging to the Dalit community.

Mahato attended an event at  Shubnarayan Ram’s (Chamar) house. Ram hosted a feast for religious priests to celebrate the birth of his third child, on 3 January 2023.  Mahato was excluded from his community(Koiri)  because Mahato also participated in the same feast.

Mahato says,  “They have expelled me from the caste group and have demanded a public apology. ” Ever since he participated in the event at Ram’s house he has been barred to participate in any .clutural or religious events of the Koiri, Yadav community in the village.

Mahato filed a complaint on 19 January at the local police office, Gaushala, demanding action and justice against the culprits. But he alleged that the police did not pay much attention to the complaint.

Mahato says, “I have never discriminated between lower and upper castes. I don’t accept caste untouchability. They are forcing me to apologize publicly on the pretext of eating a meal touched by someone from the Dalit community. I have taken the stand that I will not apologize.” The Ward Chairperson of Sonma Rural Municipality-4, Mithu Rai, corroborated Mahato’s account of the incident.

Deputy Inspector of Police (SAI) Bhuvansingh Karki of the Area Police Office said they registered the complaint and questioned the accused. Karki said that the police will take further action after Inspector Ranjan Mishra, returns from his leave.

Caste discrimination is punishable by three months to three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 50,000 to 2,00,000.
