Eight People in Gandaki Province Lost Lives Due to Landslides, Road Blockages Impact Daily Lives

Eight people have died in Gandaki Province due to landslides caused by continuous rainfall over the past few days, and one person remains missing. Additionally, nine people were injured in the same landslides. The contineous rains have flooded houses and blocked roads and highways, significantly impacting daily life.

According to Tanahun District Representative Prakashchandra Bhattarai, three people died in a landslide on July 6 in Shuklagandaki, Tanahun. Among the deceased are Hira Nepali, 40, 37-year-old Anisha Bastola, and 65-year-old Shyam Bhandari of Shuklagandaki Municipality-7 Kaure.

On the afternoon of July 6, a landslide struck from above the house of Hira Nepali and Sunmaya Kumal in Shuklagandaki Municipality-7, Kaure. Subsequently, Nepali, Bastola, and Bhandari disappeared while they were inside the house, trying to remove their belongings.

SP Apilraj Bohora of the District Police Office informed that the bodies of those individuals were found following a search by residents along with the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police after they went missing. Bohora added that the body of Hira Nepali was found on the night of July 6, while the bodies of Bastola and Bhandari were discovered on the morning of July 7.

Likewise, 40-year-old Bishnu Bahadur Nepali, 26-year-old Bishal Timlasina, and 35-year-old Rabi Ghimire from the same area sustained injuries due to the landslide. They received treatment at the GP Koirala National Centre for Respiratory Diseases in Belchautara.

Similarly, on June 22, 50-year-old Krishna Bahadur Pulami from Rishing Rural Municipality-1, Malinga, died due to a landslide that occurred outside the under-construction tunnel route of the Tanahun Hydropower project in Rishing Rural Municipality-1, Jhaputar. In the same incident, 51-year-old Samlal Shrestha from Sundarbajar Municipality-2, Lamjung District, was injured. He was treated at Damauli Hospital.

Chief District Officer Janardan Gautam said that due to incessant rains, the traffic was disrupted in Sera Nayabasti located in Shuklagandaki Municipality-7 of Prithivi Highway, and the vehicles have been operating one-way since the morning of 7 July.

According to Parbat District Representative Santosh Thapa, 40-year-old Jhalak Paudel of Phalebas Municipality-1 Karkineta Timubot and 33-year-old Tulsiram Paudel of Andhikhola Rural Municipality-3 of Syangja died after being buried in a landslide in Phalebas Municipality-1 Karkineta of Parbat. Likewise, In the afternoon, Tulsiram Poudel also lost his life to a landslide that fell from the hillside above the cowshed. Reports indicate that he had gone to his friend’s residence along with Jhalak.

According to Cholakanta Upadhyay, Ward Chairperson of Karkineta, Tulsiram’s body was found about 100 meters below the shed and house that were swept away by the landslide. Jhalak’s body was found in Andhikhola Rural Municipality-4 Shepath of Syangja. Cattle including two buffaloes, one ox, and four goats kept in Jhalak Paudel’s house were also buried in the landslide. Due to continuous rain since Friday, there was a risk of landslides damaging the shed. The landslide occurred while Jhalk was attempting to remove his cattle from the shed, which sits approximately 300 meters above his house.

According to Syangja District Representative Samikshya Dhakal, two people died in a landslide on June 22 due to incessant rain. Two people died and one person was missing when a landslide occurred in the house of Ishwari Lamsal living in Lamakhet, Syangja Biruwa Rural Municipality- 6.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of Syangja District Police Office Indra Bahadur Rana said that 65-year-old Guishwari Sharma Marasini and 67-year-old Harimaya Sharma of Biruwa Rural Municipality-6 Majhkot are among the deceased.

Rana stated that police deployed from Archale Police Station are searching for 71-year-old Madhav Sharma, a resident of Majhakot Municipality, who went missing. Additionally, they have rescued five individuals with minor injuries. Rana added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

According to Nawalpur District Representative Gyanu Pangeni, 25 houses in Gaidakot were flooded when the flow of the Narayani River increased flooding the settlement due to continuous rainfall. Ved Bahadur Paudel, Information Officer of the District Police Office, reported that flooding has affected residents in Gaindakot-2, Bote Tole, entering their homes and causing damage to clothing and grain. Additionally, wooden objects carried by the floodwaters have also entered the houses. Paudel reported that after the flood entered homes, locals, police, and public representatives helped relocate food grains and livestock to houses of locals and relatives located 200 meters away. There have been no human or animal casualties so far.

According to Myagdi District Representative Amrit Prasad Paudel, all road access to Mustang has been blocked due to landslides caused by continuous rain. The Pokhara-Jomsom air route and the Beni-Jomsom road connect to Mustang, but with both routes closed, Mustang has become like a blockade.

Direct transport service on the Beni-Jomsom-Korla Kaligandaki corridor road has been blocked due to a landslide in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2 Baisari. The landslide began on July 4, initially allowing a few vehicles to pass, but the road has been completely closed since the morning of July 6.

According to Jhalak Sharma of Raghuganga Rural Municipality-3 Rakhu, travel on the Beni-Jomsom road is risky. He noted that with landslides occurring in many places, travel has become very difficult and dangerous. He urged people to avoid traveling unless it is necessary.

Janakraj Panta, the Chief District Officer of Mustang, stated that since the Jomsom-Pokhara air flights have been halted due to increased rain since June 29, there may be difficulties in transporting patients with complicated illnesses for treatment. He mentioned, ‘All roads within the Mustang district are operational, but we are facing challenges as the road towards Myagdi could not be opened.’

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhojraj Pandey from the District Police Office, Mustang, the Jomsom-Beni road frequently gets blocked when floods occur in the Marpha River.

According to Inspector Rajan Rayamajhi, Information Officer of the District Police Office, Myagdi, the Beni-Jomsom road section towards Myagdi has been blocked in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2, both in Lower Baisari and Upper Baisari areas. Similarly, while the roadblock in Bhurung Tatopani has been cleared, direct traffic between Beni and Jomsom remains impossible due to the ongoing blockage in Baisari that has yet to be removed.

Similarly, the Beni-Darwang road section connecting West Myagdi is completely blocked at the turning point of Beni Municipality-4, Faparkhet, according to police sources. Additionally, the road has been blocked in Malika Rural Municipality-4, Bangebhir.

According to the District Police Office, Myagdi, most of the roads were blocked due to rains, causing problems in Rural life.
