Earthquake Victims Concerned About their Unbuilt Houses as Government Delays Reconstruction Work
Citizens in Jajarkot, who have been spending nights in temporary shelters after the earthquake on November 3, 2023, are becoming increasingly concerned. Despite hoping to receive new homes soon, they are in distress as the government has not moved forward with the reconstruction work. Victims who expected to build homes and live in warm shelters after receiving government funds have yet to receive support, even after one year. Surendra Rana, a local from Bheri Municipality-1, Maide said they waited for one year and a month for the funds to build homes, but the reconstruction work has been delayed due to the funds not arriving on time. He added that the lack of both a house and funds has made it difficult for them to survive in the cold weather.
Even after 13 months since the earthquake, they have been spending day and night under tin roofs, struggling with the cold. Those who earn a living through daily wage labor had hoped to receive government funds to rebuild their homes, but they have been waiting for a year. Struggling to meet basic needs, they find it difficult to secure warm shelter as the promised funds have yet to be provided. “Once again, we had to live under a tin roof in the cold weather,” said Surendra Khatri, a resident of Bheri Municipality-3. Additionally, the local government has not distributed the second installment for temporary housing, preventing citizens from repaying loans taken for housing construction. Shiva Prasad Sharma, another local from Bheri Municipality-3, stated that the temporary housing funds should have been distributed within three months after the earthquake, but the citizens still haven’t received their promised funds, and they hope to receive a safe home.
Bhawana Bhandari, a local from Bheri Municipality-3, said that due to the government’s delay in advancing reconstruction work and failure to provide funds, they have to live under a tin roof, and the cold still bothers them despite covering themselves with warm clothes. She added that if the cold becomes unbearable, she will have to return to her damaged house.
