District Hospital of Bardiya in Need of Disability Friendly Infrastructure

  July 26, 2021 By: INSEC

The district hospital of Bardiya located in Gulariya lacks disability-friendly infrastructure like beds and toilets which is creating difficulty for patients with disabilities.

The hospital has 50 beds and none of them is disability-friendly, they neither have a commode installed in their toilets. People with disabilities are facing difficulties due to the lack of special beds for them when they are hospitalized.

Manisha Chanara of Gulariya Municipality-9 is one of the beneficiaries having difficulty due to the lack of disability-friendly infrastructure in the hospital. Manisha cannot move the lower half of her body. Due to an unfortunate accident, she now has to take the assistance of a wheelchair to move from one place to another. She needs support to go to the toilet.

Manisha was admitted to Bardiya Hospital on June 29, 2021, after being infected with Covid-19. She has complained that she has suffered the most while undergoing treatment due to her disability.

Unable to move without the help of others and due to lack of disability-friendly toilets and beds she was deprived of access to medical care under the special supervision of health workers. Her parents were also infected because they had to take care of her while she visited the hospital regularly for 14 days.

Manisha is just a representative of many other persons with disabilities who were infected with COVID-19 and facing difficulties in treatment, said Krishna Bahadur Chhetri, Chairperson of Bardiya Disability Rehabilitation Centre, Bardiya.

Angad Shrestha, Chairperson of the Hospital Development Committee, admits that there are no disability-friendly beds and toilets in Bardiya District Hospital. However, he said that the disability-friendly beds and toilets will be managed this year as they have already asked the provincial government for it.
