Discussion Programs on Situation and Challenges of Human Rights Defenders Concluded

The discussion program on the situation of human rights and the challenges of human rights defenders was concluded in Lahan, on June 12, 2023.

The program was conducted by The Informal Sector Service Center, INSEC, Mukti Nepal, WOREC, Human Rights Protection Center (Network), and Women’s Human Rights Defenders Network in coordination with the National Human Rights Commission.

Manju Khatiwada, head of the office of the National Human Rights Commission in Madhes Province, said that the Human Rights Commission should look at all the districts of Madhesh Province and that the commission is always ready to monitor the violation of human rights even though it has limited manpower. She said that the human rights defenders in the district are the strength of the commission and will move forward by cooperating and coordinating with them.

Raju Paswan, Coordinator of INSEC Madhesh Province, said that when monitoring an incident, human rights defenders should monitor human rights situations by prioritizing their safety. He said that organizations such as Human Rights Commission, and INSEC are working to enhance the capacity of human rights defenders in the district and increase legal knowledge and security.

In the program, the members of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, Mahesh Singh, journalist Feroze Sheikh, and Manilal B.K, activists Devraj Pokharel, Ganga Adhikari, Rambharosi Mahato, Anita Chaudhary, Shyam Kumari Sah, and other participants requested to make the role of the commission more active.
