An inmate of Bajura Jail has died on the way to the hospital for treatment. He died on October 4, 2021.

Dal Bahadur Thapa, 45, of Budhiganga Municipality-8 died while being taken to Dhangadhi for treatment, said DSP Madanjit Mahara of District Police Office, Bajura.

Thapa was a patient with diabetes and high blood pressure and he was referred for further treatment by the District Hospital, Bajura on October 3. Dr. Dipendra Budha of Bajura Hospital informed that he was referred to Dhangadhi from the District Hospital Bajura for treatment on the afternoon of October 3 but the prison had taken him only on October 4 saying they were coordinating with his relatives and managing the documents.

Thapa was rushed to Bajura District Jail on October 2 for treatment.

After recovering, the hospital discharged him on the same day and sent him to prison. Dr. Budha informed that Thapa was admitted to Bajura Hospital again on October 3 after he became unwell.

The Bajura branch of the prison said that it took time to sort out the documents and the patient’s relatives also refused to take him so he died due to delay of treatment.

Thapa was in need of critical care for which ICU was not available in Bajure therefore he was referred to Dhangadhi as there was no such arrangement in Bajura.

The body has been kept at Achham Hospital for post-mortem. Narendra Thapa, a relative of the deceased, said that his relatives did not take the body until an investigation was conducted against the negligence of the prison.

Chief of the Bajura District Jail, Sun Raj Rawal, however, said that it is not their fault.

Chief District Officer Gopal Kumar Adhikari said that the cause of Thapa’s death was under investigation.
