Daily Lives Disrupted in Bhojpur as Landslides Washed Away Roads
The Panchdhare-Chakhewa road in Bhojpur has been blocked following a landslide that swept away a section of the road. The landslide occurred in the Ghurbise area of the Rumathumki region on the Panchdhare-Chakhewa road, causing significant traffic disruptions. The road closure in Tyamkemaiyum Rural Municipality-9, Ghurbise area, has prevented ambulance vehicles from moving, exacerbating the situation.
After the main roads were destroyed by floods, the most significant problems have been operating ambulances, transporting food items, and sending children to school. Approximately 500 meters of the Panchdhare-Chakhewa road section was swept away by floods on July 31 and August 1, making life difficult for the locals. Although the road has been damaged by landslides for some time, the lack of state attention to its maintenance has worsened the situation. The road, which connects the neighboring district of Khotang, has been severely affected. Local resident Ekaraj Bista stated that the recent large landslide has made even foot travel dangerous.“The landslide has caused problems with transportation,” he stated . “Continuous landslides have made even walking difficult. The road blockage has made daily life challenging. The state needs to pay attention to reopening the blocked road.”
Similarly, Man Bahadur Sunar of Panchdhare, Tyamkemaiyum Rural Municipality-9, stated that the road blockage is causing problems not only for the residents of the western region of Bhojpur but also for those in the neighboring district of Khotang. “Landslides in the upper regions have caused floods, blocking other roads in the lower areas as well,” he said. “The road blockage due to landslides has made daily life very difficult. It would be easier if the state took prompt action to restore the road.” Ward Chairperson Nabhraj Mangpahang of Temkemaiyum Rural Municipality-9 reported that landslides in the Shir Ghurbise area of the Rautes River pose a risk to the settlements in the lower regions as well. He mentioned that approximately 20 households in villages such as Rautes and Lerkhak, Kabhrel, are at risk from the landslides. Ward Chairperson Mangpahang stated that the Panchdhare-Chakhewa road has been blocked due to landslides and lower settlements are put at risk every year by landslides in this area and significant damage has been caused to the lower regions by floods in the Rautes River. He also mentioned that efforts are being made to clear the blocked road and restore the operation of vehicles, including ambulances.
