Complaints Registered Against Accused of Caste Discrimination

Prakash BK of Badimalika Municipality-9 and Parvati Sunar, a resident of Kanchanpur district,  filed a complaint against Devraj Padhyay, the priest of Badimalika Municipality-8, at the district police office on May 23, on the charge of caste discrimination. They accused him of locking the temple, to stop them from entering when the couple approached the temple for their marriage ceremony.

Inspector Ravindra Kathayat of the District Police Officer said that Gorakh BK, the brother of the bridegroom, filed a complaint against the priest of the temple on the evening of May 8, alleging that they were subjected to caste discrimination and inhumane treatment. The accused is absconding and the search for the accused priest is on.

Madan BK, Chairperson of Dalit Journalist Association, Bajura, said that Padhyay, the priest of Badimalika Municipality-8, was informed that the couple was coming to the temple to get married on June 7, 2023. However, He locked the temple on the day of the wedding ceremony, June 8, 2023.

The couple waited for the priest. He couldn’t be contacted by phone. They ended up conducting the ceremony outside the temple.

Prakash BK tells how the priest had told them in the past, that they were not allowed to enter the temple  ‘We were not allowed inside the temple.  Amar Khadka, Mayor of Badimalika Municipality, has contacted the ward chairperson of Badimalika Municipality-9, Suryakiran BK, and asked him to file a complaint against the priest.

Chief District Officer Pushkar Khadka, confirmed that the Ward Chairperson of Badimalika Municipality-9 Suryakiran BK filed a complaint regarding caste discrimination in the temple.
