Complaint Filed Against Senior – Citizen Accused of Sexual Abuse
Police arrested Prajapati Regmi, 86, of Narayan Municipality-8, on 8 April 2023, on the charge of sexual abuse of a nine-year-old girl. Inspector Deepak Bista of District Police Office Dailekh said the arrest was made based on the complaint.
It is said in the complaint that the accused sexually assaulted the victim by luring her to his bedroom on 6 April.
The health examination and treatment of the girl were done on 6 April at Dailekh District Hospital.
Inspector Bista informed that the accused has been detained, and the investigation of the incident has started.
According to Section 10 of the Senior Citizens Act 2206, the court should prioritize cases where senior citizens are plaintiffs or defendants. According to Section 12, there is a provision to exempt 25 percent of punishment for senior citizens aged 65-70 years, 50 percent for senior citizens aged 70-75, and up to 75 percent for convicts aged 75 and above.
Furthermore, the act also enshrines a provision of holding imprisoned senior citizens in care centers instead of prison, depending on the length of imprisonment to be paid and the seriousness of the crime, unless the convict is exempted by a court order.
