Coliform Bacteria Detected in Tap Water of Schools and Health Institutions

The fecal bacteria ‘Coliform’ has been detected in the water supply of health institutions, schools, and ward offices in Umakunda Rural Municipality. According to the Health Branch of the Rural Municipality, testing of drinking water samples from 15 taps used by these institutions revealed the presence of coliform bacteria, which is commonly found in feces.

Following the cholera outbreak in the country, the Water/Wastewater Quality Assurance Division of KUKL tested 15 sources of drinking water from health institutions, schools, and ward offices in Umakunda Rural Municipality, ranging from Ward No. 1 Gumdel to Ward No. 7 Bhuji. According to Abhijit Sunuwar, the public health inspector of the rural municipality, all the tap water tested was found to contain fecal bacteria, including Coliform and E. coli.

Since fecal bacteria have been found in the drinking water, there is a risk of cholera spreading. The rural municipality has advised everyone to drink boiled water.
