Climate Change Reduces Water Sources in Patarasi

Patarasi Rural Municipality is a local level entity that has access to water resources, land, forests, and medicinal plants. In recent times, however, due to unplanned development, deforestation, lack of tree plantation, and absence of environmental conservation, water sources have been decreasing as a result of climate change.

Patarasi Rural Municipality conducted a study on the main water sources. Out of 495 water sources within the municipality, 365 are operational. However, there is data showing that 130 water sources (main springs) have dried up, and only 129 of them are currently in use. The drying up of these water sources is attributed to unplanned development, deforestation, and a lack of tree plantation, among other factors.

Nepal Journalists Association Jumla President Purnaprasad Chaulagai stated that it would be difficult to conserve water sources without environmental protection, emphasizing that local governments must pay attention to this issue. He mentioned that future development should be environmentally friendly. He also highlighted that Patarasi has the potential to achieve prosperity through water, land, agriculture, and medicinal plants.

Patarasi Rural Municipality Chairperson Purnasingh Bohora stated that the local government has introduced an environmental law to protect water sources. He stated, “Our developmental activities have also led to environmental degradation. Now is the time to be cautious. We have enacted a law to protect water sources. Additionally, preparations are underway to introduce a policy on water and forest conservation through the winter rural village assemblies. Patarasi has the potential to prosper through agriculture, medicinal plants, and water sources.”
