Clash Between Police and Locals Leaves Nine Injured

During a confrontation between armed police, deployed to establish a temporary camp for the construction of the Lapsiphedi sub-station as part of the proposed Upper Tamakoshi hydropower project, and local protesters opposing the sub-station’s construction in Shankharapur Municipality-3, Bozeni on November 17, six individuals sustained injuries. Among them were two people, including DSP Devraj Rai of the Armed Police, and a Nepal Police officer. Additionally, four individuals were arrested for their involvement in the clash.

The injured parties, including 32-year-old Secretary Tamang of Shankharapur Municipality-3, Bozeni, 46-year-old Tiuri Tamang of Bozeni, Shankharapur Municipality-3, 40-year-old Man Bahadur Tamang of Bozeni, Shankharapur Municipality-3, 48-year-old Sanchimaya Tamang of Bozeni, 36-year-old Fursang Lama of Shankharapur Municipality-3, Bozeni, and 33-year-old Manoj Tamang of Shankharapur Municipality-3, Bozeni, received treatment at Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital in Sankhu, as confirmed by spokesperson RK Tamang from INSEC.

SP Kumod Dhungel reported that two individuals, including DSP Devraj Rai of the Armed Police, and a Nepal Police soldier, sustained injuries during the confrontation with locals. SP Dhungel added that the injured security personnel are currently undergoing treatment at Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital in Sankhu. Furthermore, authorities have charged 36-year-old Jaiman Waiwa, 45-year-old Harkaman Waiwa, and 42-year-old Suk Bahadur Waiwa, all from Shankharapur Municipality-3, along with 26-year-old Suryaman Tamang, with allegedly assaulting a team of armed policemen tasked with establishing a temporary camp for the sub-station construction. These individuals are currently under investigation, being held at the Buddh police circle, as informed by SP Kumod Dhungel, the spokesperson of the District Police Complex Kathmandu.
