By-election in Karnali Province Being Held Peacefully (Photo Feature)
The by-election for various positions in Karnali Province began peacefully at 7 AM on December 1. The elections are taking place for the position of Vice Chairperson in Sarkegad Rural Municipality, Humla; Ward Chairperson in Tripurasundari Municipality-5, Dolpa; Ward Chairperson in Tilagufa Municipality-4, Kalikot; Deputy Mayor in Nalgad Municipality, Jajarkot; Ward Chairperson in Kuse Rural Municipality-7, Jajarkot; Ward Chairperson in Sanibheri Rural Municipality-4, Rukum West; Chairperson in Mahabu Rural Municipality, Dailekh; and Ward Chairperson in Dullu Municipality-13, Dailekh.
INSEC Humla District Representative Nanda Singh reports that the election for the Vice-Chairperson position in Sarkegad Rural Municipality has started and a total of 268 police officers have been mobilized for this by-election. Chief Election Officer Sambhu Prasad Baral has stated that 73 staff members have been deployed across 13 voting stations in 12 locations to ensure a smooth and dispute-free election. Six candidates have registered for the election, and the voter count stands at 6,810, as informed by District Election Officer Bhim Rokaya.
INSEC Dolpa District Representative Purna Sarki reports that voting has started in Tripurasundari Municipality-5, Dolpa. Chief District Officer Ram Bahadur Mahat informed that the voting began at 8:20 AM. Due to the cold weather, both representatives and voters arrived late, which caused a delay in the start of the voting process, which was scheduled to begin at 7 AM. Mahat mentioned that the voting process has started peacefully, and so far, 23 votes have been cast.
The election for the position of Ward Chairperson has begun with Narbahadur Jhankri from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) Rajendra Prasad Neupane from the Nepali Congress, and Narbahadur Rokaya from the Nepal Communist Party (UML) as candidates. Although Jwoti Gharti from the CPN (Unified Socialist) had filed her candidacy, she withdrew and announced her support for the Maoist Centre candidate, Gharti. The total number of voters in the ward is 353.
In the previous local elections, there were a total of 363 voters, with the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) securing 106 votes, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) obtaining 103 votes, and the Nepali Congress receiving 83 votes. This time, a tough competition is expected between the Maoist Centre and UML. After the CPN (Unified Socialist) Party announced its support for the Maoist candidate, there was an expectation that the Maoist candidate may be elected. The election for this position started following the death of the previously elected Ward Chairperson, Nandlal Rokaya, before completing his term.
According to Kalibahadur Malla, INSEC Kalikot District Representative, voting for Tilagufa Municipality-4, Rachuli voting station in Kalikot started peacefully from 7:10 AM.
According to Basudev Sharma, INSEC representative from Jajarkot and Rukum West, the by-election for Nalgad Municipality started at 7 AM. The election is proceeding peacefully. Although the voting process began at 7 AM, due to the cold weather, some citizens were unable to participate in the early voting. In Ward No. 1 of Nalgad Municipality, voting had not begun by 8:30 AM. However, voters have been arriving at other voting stations. Security personnel have been deployed at all four centers. Similarly, voting for the position of Ward Chairperson in Ward No. 4 of Sanibheri Rural Municipality, Rukum West started peacefully at 7 AM.
According to Amar Bahadur Sunar, INSEC representative, Dailekh, voting for the positions of Chairperson in Mahabu Rural Municipality and Ward Chairperson in Ward No. 13 of Dullu Municipality has been running peacefully since the morning. The Chief Election Officer, District Judge Kul Prasad Pandey, informed that voting is taking place at 16 voting stations in 6 wards of Mahabu Rural Municipality and at four voting stations in two locations in Ward No. 13 of Dullu Municipality. DSP Sunil Dahal from the District Police Office reported that around 200 votes have already been cast at all 20 voting stations, with the queue of voters increasing.
