Nepal Tamang Ghedung Association and Nepal Magar Association held a demonstration at the District Police Office in Teku on August 2. They have accused the police of arresting their activists during the protest and subjecting them to beating and torture inside the police premises. On August 2, the Nepal Tamang Ghedung Association and the Nepal Magar Association organized a protest at the District Police Office in Kathmandu, demanding the arrest of advocate Bhagwati Pandey. The controversy arose when she expressed the idea of marriage between brothers and sisters within the Muslim, Magar, and Tamang communities.

In a conversation with the INSEC representative, Mohan Gole Tamang, the president of Nepal Tamang Ghedung Association, stated that the police employed excessive force to apprehend over three dozen of their activists during the protest. The police subsequently took the activists inside the police office and subjected them to torture.

Gole stated that the use of unnecessary force and beating protestors to the point of death, who were peacefully advocating for their demands, is reprehensible and is against the principles of human rights.Similarly, the president of Nepal Magar Association, Gyanendra Pun Magar, mentioned that during the peaceful protest, the police arrested the protestors and subjected them to beatings inside the police office.

Magar stated that following the arrest and arrival at the police office, their members were subjected to beatings and torture to the extent that they had to be taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

Dilmaya Tamang, who sustained injuries from the police beating, is currently undergoing treatment at the National Trauma Center in Mahabouddha. She revealed to INSEC that after her arrest and while inside the police office, she was beaten with sticks and boots. Tamang sustained severe injuries on both of her legs as a result of the police beating.

During INSEC’s inquiry about the incident where the arrested individuals were taken inside the police premises and subjected to beatings, DSP Anil Adhikari of the District Police Office in Kathmandu clarified that they did not use any force against the protestors after arresting them.

DSP Anil Adhikari provided information that the two arrested protestors who were injured were rescued by the police and sent for treatment at Bir Hospital. DSP Anil Adhikari mentioned that during the clash, the arrested protestors had used stones and bricks to attack, resulting in injuries to 18 police personnel.
