Accused Arrested for Child Marriage
The police have arrested eight people, including 39-year-old Babu Lok Bahadur Pariyar of Chhathar Jorpati-2, Dhankuta District, on the charge of child marriage of a 16-year-old daughter to a Chinese national.
Police arrested a 33-year-old Chinese national, Lee Teng, in Barahkshetra Municipality-1 Chatra on the charge of child marriage on 16 october and made the incident public .
DSP Ramprasad Timalsina of the District Police Office stated that 33-year-old Lee Teng, a Chinese national of Hubei, China , along with the girl’s father, was arrested on charges of child marriage involving the 16-year-old girl. Additionally, 43-year-old Deepak Darji from Belka Municipality-9, 42-year-old Badri Bikram Rai, 20-year-old Sitlal Gurung from Putalibazar Municipality-12 in Syangja, and 20-year-old Roshinmaya Tamang from Rosi Rural Municipality-3 in Kavrepalanchok, as well as Chinese nationals 35-year-old Dong Shihao and Wu Heji, were also arrested for investigation.
The legal provision states that a Nepali woman must be at least 20 years old to marry. The National Criminal (Code) Act, 2017 specifies that no one may marry or arrange a marriage before reaching the age of 20. Additionally, those who commit this offense can face up to three years in prison and a fine of Rs 30,000 .
Police have initially speculated that the reason for marrying a Nepali woman remains unclear. Chinese nationals may have married Nepali women in connection with business activities. All those arrested are being held for further investigation with a date extension approved by the district court.
The health examination of the girl was conducted at the district hospital on October 16. Although the police publicly disclosed the incident on October 16, they indicated that the announcement was delayed to avoid compromising the investigation.
