Absence transportation and Road Poses Threat to Right to Health
In several villages within the district, the lack of adequate healthcare facilities and roads is causing significant challenges for the locals when it comes to transporting patients to hospitals for treatment.
One such case occurred in Shivnath Rural Municipality, where a 45-year-old individual named Kardi Saud fell ill. Due to the absence of proper healthcare facilities, the villagers had to transport Kardi to the District Hospital in Dadeldhura for medical attention.
A local resident named Binay Saud expressed his concerns, stating that the absence of a hospital and accessible roads resulted in the need to carry the sick individual on a stretcher for a two-hour walk to reach Sharmali, where a road is available. The situation becomes more complicated since many young people from the village are employed in India, leaving fewer individuals available to carry patients on stretchers to medical facilities.
This incident exemplifies the challenges faced by remote villages like Bodbya, which lack proper road infrastructure. The road construction that was meant to connect Bodbya village was halted in a forested area, compelling villagers to walk for hours to reach a motorway.
The absence of a proper road network not only complicates healthcare access but also affects other aspects of daily life. Transporting agricultural products to markets becomes difficult, and even funeral arrangements pose challenges. Local resident Padam Joshi highlighted the problems faced due to the lack of road connectivity.
While the construction of a road initiated by the rural municipality was postponed due to the planned construction of the Mahakali Corridor through the same area, the local authorities are reportedly working to establish road access to Bodbya village. Karnsingh Saud, the chairman of the rural municipality, mentioned that efforts are underway to address this issue.
Despite the presence of road networks in most areas of the district, transportation options are limited, especially during the rainy season. This situation leads to annual hardships for the local residents.
