A total of 251 million children and youth are still out of school: UNESCO

  November 5, 2024 By: INSEC

Despite progress, UNESCO has reported that 251 million children and youth are still out of school. According to UNESCO’s *Global Education Monitoring Report 2024*, the global out-of-school population has only decreased by 1% in nearly 10 years. The report highlights that a major reason for this is the long-term underinvestment in education, especially in low- and lower-middle-income countries.
“Education is a key driver of prosperous, inclusive, and peaceful societies. If we do not take serious steps to ensure that every child worldwide has the opportunity to learn and access equal opportunities, there is a risk that quality education will become the privilege of only a few individuals.”
“At the UNESCO Global Education Meeting, we call for bold leadership to drive curriculum reforms and increase investment in education through renewed mechanisms of solidarity between high and low-income countries.” — This statement is mentioned in a press release issued by UNESCO’s Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, who emphasised that education is a key driver of prosperous, inclusive, and peaceful societies.
According to UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report 2024, since the adoption of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, more than 110 million children and youth have enrolled in school. It has been reported that today, more children are attending school than before.
