Writ against appointment of Press Council Chair
A writ petition was filed at the Supreme Court today challenging the appointment of Bhawani Baral as the Chair of Press Council Nepal according to RSS source.
Arguing that the appointment was a violation of Clause 6 (1) of the Press Council Act, Baikuntha Prasad Bhandari of Gokarneswar municipality-2 has filed the writ, naming the office of the prime minister, ministry of information and communications and the council as defendants.
According to the Act, the Chair should be either a retired judge or senior advocate or an individual with distinguished contribution to the journalism sector. Bhandari also argues that the appointment was made in violation of the election code of conduct.
Baral was appointed to head the PCN by a cabinet meeting on May 18.
