Women Choked to Death in Menstrual Hut
While the country has been 16 days campaign of violence against women a 21 year old Parvati Buda Rawat has been found dead on 2 December morning in Safebagar Municipality – 3 in the menstrual hut.
According to her brother-in – law after having dinner the previous night she had gone to sleep in the hut as it was the fourth day of her periods. When she didn’t wake up till 7 am the next morning they went to call her and found her dead in the hut.
According to District Police office inspector Narpati Bhatta the hut where her body was found was located 100 meters away from the house and was 7ft long, 8ft wide and 6ft in height. Traces of small fire was found in the hut and seems that she died due to choking. Parvati body has been sent to the district hospital for post mortum . It had been only a year and a half of her marriage and her husband was in India for work.
Siddheshwor Rural Municipality has been declared a chaupadi free meaning menstrual hut free Rural municipality. Achham district has witnessed more than 14 deaths in menstrual hut since 2007.
