Pay the Arrears of Sugarcane Farmers Expeditiously: Commission
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to implement the agreement between the Government of Nepal and the Sugarcane Farmers’ Struggle Committee on January 28, 2020.
A statement issued by the Commission on January 20 states that the sugarcane industry has received only a partial amount from the sugarcane farmers within 21 days of the agreement as per the agreement with the Government of Nepal.
The statement also called on the family of the deceased sugarcane farmer Narayan Raya Yadav and other farmers to make available the remaining amount as per the agreement as soon as possible.
In the statement, the commission’s provincial office in Janakpur said it was closely monitoring the labor and property rights of sugarcane farmers in Dhanusha, Sarlahi and Mahottari districts along with their long-standing demands and struggle programs.
During the monitoring, the commission had a discussion with the coordinator of the struggle committee, sugar mill management, and local sugarcane farmers.
Also, the commission reached the house of Narayan Raya Yadav in Sarlahi and inquired about the economic and social condition of his family and whether the sugarcane farmers have yet received the dues or not. Narayan Raya Yadav died in Kathmandu on December 29 during the protest.
The spokesperson and joint secretary of the commission urged all concerned to take action against the industrialists who do not provide the dues and respect and protect the rights of the farmers.
It is mentioned in the press release issued by Tikaram Pokharel.
