Memorandum Presented to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Demanding Establishment Of SAARC Level Human Rights Mechanism

In a memorandum to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Government of Nepal, Pradip Kumar Gyawali, the members of Forum Asia and INSEC have reiterated their demand for the establishment of SAARC level human rights mechanism.

“We want to reiterate our long-standing demand for the establishment of a South Asian human rights mechanism. We are confident that such a mechanism will facilitate a collective solution to the problems faced by South Asian countries,”- stated in the memorandum submitted by Forum Asia.

Receiving the memorandum, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Government of Nepal Pradip Kumar Gyawali said that the Government of Nepal has taken the issues raised in the memorandum positively and will take necessary initiatives.

Stating that the cooperation of the government and the civil society is indispensable for the restoration of human rights, Minister Gyawali said that such a mechanism would help the work of the government.

Forum Asia’s Treasurer Dr Suresh Kumar Dhakal said that a memorandum has been submitted demanding the formation of regional level human rights mechanism in all SAARC countries including Nepal.

Pointing out that other regional level networks like SAARC also have human rights mechanisms, INSEC’s Executive Director Bijay Raj Gautam said that there is a need for a SAARC level human rights mechanism.

He reminded that INSEC has been demanding the formation of SAARC level human rights mechanism for a long time

‘A common initiative is also needed to address a number of economic, social and cultural rights issues. There is a need for a regional mechanism to deal with such issues, ” he added.
