Human Rights Activists Concerned About the Incident of Bardibas
Buddhiraj Neupane, 32, a resident of Bardibas Municipality-1, was shot dead by police on November 26 during a protest against the murder of Gulbasa Khatun, 6, daughter of Shahid Alam of Bardibas Municipality-14.
Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) Province 2, Advocacy Forum Province 2, WOREC Dhanusha, Women’s Human Rights Defenders Network Dhanusha and Amnesty International Nepal Women’s Group 46 have issued a joint statement on November 25 condemning the incident. They have demanded an impartial and independent investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
“Article 16 of the Constitution of Nepal 2072 BS has ensured the right to life of the people,” the statement said. One person was killed and another was injured in a police firing in the incident, which appears to be a violation of that constitutional right. In the federal democratic system of governance, the first responsibility of the state is to protect the lives of the people. We believe that Neupane’s death and the injuries of others were tragic. “
As the accused in the incident has been arrested and has gone through the legal process, the human rights activists have requested the protesters to keep their demands in a restrained manner and to ensure the rights of the citizens in the state.
Human rights activists have requested the Government of Nepal to take legal action against the perpetrators and provide appropriate compensation to the victims.
