Beaten On Charge of Alleged Witchcraft: Accused Arrested

The District Police Office, Baglung, has arrested Tej Bahadur Rana, 38, Bijay Rana, 26, and Purna Bahadur Rana, 31, a 19-year-old woman and a 28-year-old woman of Badigad Rural Municipality-2 on December 16 in accusation of beating a 36-year-old woman severely after alleging her of witchcraft.

Inspector Lokendra Shrestha of the District Police Office, Baglung, told INSEC that the victim had lodged a complaint against the accused at the District Police Office, Baglung on December 16, alleging that she was beaten and mentally tortured on December 13.

He said that the victim was examined at Dhaulagiri Hospital, Baglung, and the woman was found to have injuries on various parts of her body.

According to Inspector Shrestha, the accused has been alleging the victim of being a witch for a long time.

According to the Accusation of Witchcraft (Punishment for Offense) Act 2072 BS, a person who accuses, beats and mentally tortures somebody alleging witchcraft is liable to imprisonment for five to eight years and a fine of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
