Rita Basel of Manthali Municipality-2 is doing labor in a construction building. She works same type of work as a male laborer but unfortunately, she does not receive same wages as male laborers.
“We do the same hard work, but I am getting less paid than male co-worker” says Basel. Male workers are getting Rs 1000 a day and female are getting just Rs 700.
Not only in construction of building but also in other types of work, the wages are discriminatory. Women working in construction of Deurali road are facing similar issue. “We work same as male whole day and we get only Rs 800 however male is getting 1200” says women laborer Laxmi Karki. “We protested against the wage discrimination but if we do that we might even loose job”, she said.
These are only some examples. The situation is same everywhere in the district. In private and agriculture sectors, women are not getting similar payment as men.
CDO Krishna Prasad Sharma of Ramechhap said that in government sector, there are no discrimination regarding wage. He added that if complaint is lodged on wage discrimination, action can be taken.
The constitution of Nepal has guaranteed the equal rights of male and female under the fundamental rights. The district, however is facing wages discrimination at present.
